Cloud Forest, Andes or Amazon? Choosing Your Ecuador Birding Trip

Every trip-planning conversation I have starts with some version of this question: which region should you actually visit? All three are extraordinary, none of them is objectively "better," and the right answer depends less on the birds than on your time, pace and experience level. Here's how I'd think it through in your position.

Choose the Chocó cloud forest if…

  • You have 5 days or fewer and want maximum species density with minimum driving.
  • You want the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek and Ecuador's famous hummingbird feeders — reliable, close-range viewing rather than long searches.
  • You'd like a gentler pace: shorter drives, moderate elevation, good infrastructure (lodges, feeders, marked trails).
  • This is your first serious birding trip and you want a high success rate without a steep logistical learning curve.

This is the region covered by my 5-day Northwest Cloud Forest itinerary.

Choose the high Andes & eastern slope if…

  • The Andean Condor is a genuine priority — Antisana is the best realistic shot at it near Quito.
  • You want elevation range in one trip — from windswept páramo above 4,000 m down to subtropical forest at San Isidro and Wild Sumaco.
  • You're comfortable with more driving between sites in exchange for a wider range of habitats and a longer list.

This is the region covered by my 5-day Eastern Andes & Upper Amazon itinerary.

Choose the Amazon if…

  • You want the single highest-biodiversity ecosystem in the itinerary — different vegetation structure, different bird families entirely.
  • You're prepared for a genuinely different pace: boat and canoe transfers, humidity, and species that move fast through dense canopy.
  • You have the time (realistically 4+ days minimum just for the Amazon portion, given travel time in and out) to let the lodge's guides and infrastructure — clay licks, canopy towers — do their work.

Or don't choose — do all three

If you have two weeks and want the complete picture, that's exactly what the 15-day Full Birding West to East itinerary is built for: Chocó, eastern Andes, and Amazon, as one continuous trip with one guide the entire way — which is rarer than it sounds, since most local guides specialize in a single region.

If you're not sure yet

That's completely normal, especially if this is your first Ecuador trip. Tell me roughly how many days you have and whether you're chasing a specific list or just want a great introduction to the country's birdlife, and I'll recommend a starting point — see this post if you're newer to birding and want a lower-pressure starting place.
